In this demo, a user experiences their own hands interacting with complex graphics simulating smoke and fire effects in the environment. A user looks through a stereo head-worn display (HWD) at their own hands, which start to smoke and interact with flames. A real-time fluid simulation calculates the volumetric effects using the user's hand as input for motion and interaction surface. The hand's location and depth is estimated from the stereo view delivered by the HWD's camera pair.

Winter Augmented Reality Meeting 2011

The fields of Computer Graphics, Augmented Reality, Computer Vision and Ubiquitous Computing have the potential to be synergistic. However, the overlap and mutual contributions of each area has yet to be expressed and understood. The specialist, immersed in his or her own discipline, struggles to see the "big picture". The core of the workshop is Augmented Reality and Ubiquitous Computing and we are soliciting presentations from members of each community that illuminate the interplay between the different disciplines and AR.

We welcome presentations on all topics related to AR and Ubicomp including but not limited to:

Tracking including sensor fusion and computer vision

Smart environments

User interface techniques and interaction methods

Applications

User studies

The event is organized in a conference style. Yet we want to emphasize the informal character of WARM: There will be no proceedings or publications. Instead we invite to present new ideas and results in order to gain early feedback and hence improve chances for official publications.

The workshop lasts for two days, each having a different focus. A detailed program will be put online after the submission deadline. We plan to have 10 min presentation slots and around 5 mins of discussion time for each presentation. Demo tables will be set up for "casual" demos.

Abstract

High quality Augmented Reality applications depend crucially on 3D models for visualization, high-precision tracking and interaction. The generation and use of 3D models for AR has come a long way from static models, offline creation to online capture during operation. Parallel to this development, 3D models already have a long history of more than 20 years in Computer Vision and Image Processing. Recently, SLAM has become an important area closely linked to AR, since it inherently combines the task of self-localization and tracking, and the task of mapping and reconstructing the users environment.

The motivation of this workshop is to discuss the applications of 3D models in the field of AR, as well as to discuss the current state of the art in generation methods for high quality 3D models. In this respect we want to raise awareness for the large number of possible applications of 3D models in AR. The workshop will comprise of a paper session where modelling papers, late-breaking results and overviews over state-of-the-art are presented. In the afternoon, we will follow up with discussion sessions on different topics in Models for AR and a short closing session.

We want to collect ideas and thoughts of researches about desired properties of models, as well as debate about current and future needs of reconstruction methods for AR.

Invited Talk

The invited talk at the workshop will be given by Takeshi Kurata and has the title

MR Models for Practical Evidence-Based Services

Abstract:

Evidence-Based X (EBX) has been attracting attention more and more. For
instance, healthcare, medicine, and nursing are often put in X. The similar
trends are gradually seen in the other fields such as service industries,
since many service providers desire to improve service productivity based on
scientific and engineering approaches. However, they often have to strongly
rely on experience, intuition, and tacit knowledge due to temporal or
financial restrictions, and it results in low productivity. Mixed Reality (MR)
technology has the potential to realize Evidence-Based Service (EBS) if we
can make MR technologies more practical. One of the key components of success
is whether MR models including 3D geometry and semantic models can be
obtained, utilized, and circulated considering the balance of efficiency and
effectiveness in terms of cost, accuracy, the other benefits. In general,
service cooperation are well-suited to establish a framework of load/cost
sharing and functional enhancement among services and stakeholders. By
applying such a framework to MR for EBS, the performance of real-world
sensing can be improved by MR models and service-operation log, and meanwhile
MR-model authoring and service operation can be facilitated by real-world
sensing. In this talk, I present our own works relevant to MR for EBS such as
interactive indoor modelling, pedestrian navigation, patrol inspection,
behavior analysis and service redesign.
